Paul Cameron, ASC, was born in Montreal, Canada, and attended high school in New York City, where his brother lived. While attending school, he worked on stage lighting for plays and helped with lighting for bands. After determining that he wanted to attend film school, he enrolled at the State University of New York. He shot other students’ projects and bartended at a club in Manhattan.

'TIS THE SEASON FOR AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS

It’s that time again, not just the holidays, but awards season, when the entertainment industry is flooded with nominations: Spirit Awards, Oscars and Golden Globes, and when organizations such as the ASC, PGA, DGA, VES, ACE, SOC and ADG nominate their peers for their work over the past year. It’s also the beginning of the festival circuit, with January the kick-off for a new slate of fresh films shown at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, quickly followed by the Sundance Film Festival and the Santa Barbara International Festival. Then the year unfolds again.

BRENDAN GALVIN CREATES AN "IMMORTAL" LOOK

Brendan Galvin was born in Ireland, and attended the Dublin Institute of Technology. He began his career as a trainee, and progressed through the various classifications. He worked on several notable films including “The Commitments” and “The Crying Game” as a clapper/loader, “Far and Away” as a 2nd AC and in 1996 he operated on a film called “Curdled.” It was as a 1st AC that he began shooting on his own time, with short ends left over from various projects.

Cinematographer Tom Stern grew up in Palo Alto, California, but spent part of his teenage years in France, where he began experimenting with photography. He attended college at St. Johns in Santa Fe, New Mexico, graduating with a liberal arts degree. He continued at Stanford University, where he concentrated on film studies and honed his camera skills by shooting several student films.

PANAVISION'S GENESIS CAMERA HONORED WITH AN ENGINEERING EMMY

On Wednesday, October 26, Panavision will be among those selected to receive a prestigious Emmy Engineering award. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced this week that Panavision and Sony will receive an Engineering Emmy for technical collaboration and significant advances in single chip digital camera technology use for primetime television production.

Phedon Papamichael, ASC was born in Athens, Greece, and grew up in Germany, where he completed his education in fine arts at the University of Munich. He began working as a still photographer for various European magazines and later relocated to New York City. With an entertainment pedigree including the son of art director/production designer Phedon Papamichael Sr. and the cousin of Nick Cassavetes, it wasn’t long before he moved to Los Angeles and began working in the entertainment industry.

At 16, he was determined to become a cinematographer, but there were no reputable film schools operating in London at that time. It was also the time when there was a “catch-22” situation: you either had to be a member of the union to get a job on a film set, or you had to be working on a film set to become a member of the union.

BILL ROE, ASC, FINDS MAGIC IN "CASTLE"

 

Cinematographer Bill Roe, ASC, is a veteran of the studio system. He came up through the ranks the traditional way: first as a film loader, and rose up through the camera crew to where he is today, the director of photography on “Castle.” Recently, he has been directing episodes as well. He was 20 years old when he started working in the business, but spent many years during his youth on the set with his father, Jack Roe, who was a first AD.

Stephen Goldblatt, ASC, BSC spent his childhood in South Africa, moving to London with his parents when he was seven. He was an avid photographer, first attending photography school, and then landing jobs as a newspaper staff photographer, various jobs in London as a photographer, culminating in a special assignment for Lions Films, which was based at Shepperton Studios. He preferred the atmosphere of the crew on stage, and decided to enroll in film school. His photography portfolio was his ticket into the Royal College of Art Film School where he pursued cinematography.

Matthew (Matty) Libatique, ASC was born in Queens, New York, but migrated to Los Angeles with his family in the 1980s. After completing school, he worked at Chanticleer Films as a camera PA where he gained experience working on set. He applied and was accepted to the AFI graduate program, during which time he met Darren Aronofsky and lensed two short films for him: “Protozoa” and “No Time.” After graduating from AFI, Matty worked in the music video industry and became known for his edgy visuals, working with top directors including Phil Harder, Paul Hunter, Chris Robinson, Floria Sigismondi, and Terry Richardson. His first breakout feature, “Pi,” was directed by Aronofsky, and the two would continue to work together on “Requiem for a Dream,” “The Fountain,” and the Oscar nominated film “Black Swan.”

UPDATED SEPTEMBER 13, 2011- ***Congratulations are in order for the Creative Arts Emmy winners, which were announced on Saturday, September 10 at the Nokia Theatre Live. Among the winners were two cinematographers lensing shows shot with Panavision cameras: in the Outstanding Cinematography for a Multi-Camera Series the winner was Steven V. Silver, ASC, director of photography on CBS’ “Two and a Half Men,” and the Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series went to Jonathan Freeman, director of photography for HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.”

Larry Fong grew up in Los Angeles, California, and after graduating from UCLA with a degree in linguistics, he earned a degree in film from Art Center College of Design, where he decided to specialize in cinematography. He began his career shooting music videos, with three of them winning MTV awards for Video of the Year. Later, Larry not only formed a working relationship with longtime friend J.J. Abrams, one of the hottest writer/directors around, but he has been able to transition seamlessly between commercials, television and film.

Alar Kivilo, ASC, CSC was born in Montreal, Quebec, and has always been interested in art and stories. At sixteen, a still camera gave him a sense of how to use images to tell a story. He attended York University Film program in Toronto, but after his first year he landed a summer job on a film and has been working ever since.

Uta Briesewitz grew up in Leverkusen, Germany, where she was always fascinated by images and drawn to them.  When she was a teenager, she started as an intern at a local TV production company, and fairly quickly started working with all the major TV networks in Germany. She then continued her studies at the Berlin Film Academy and after four years in Berlin, moved to Los Angeles to enroll in the American Film Institute’s graduate program. Uta’s first US feature was “Next Stop Wonderland” (1988), directed and written by Brad Anderson, which starred Hope Davis and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

REED MORANO FETED BY WOMEN IN FILM

Reed MoranoBorn in Omaha, Nebraska but raised primarily in New York and on the east coast, cinematographer Reed Morano chose to attend NYU, one of the top film schools in the country. Her application included still photos from her photography collection and samples of her writing. After school, she entered the indie scene, shooting shorts and features. One of her recent films, “Little Birds,” premiered at Sundance, and since then, she has been lauded as one of Variety’s Top 10 Cinematographers to Watch. On June 16, 2011, she will receive the coveted Kodak Vision Award from Women in Film at the annual Crystal + Lucy awards. We spoke with Reed about the trajectory of her career, and how she got there.

Lawrence Sher was born and raised in Teaneck, New Jersey, and grew up with a passion for photography. He chose instead to study economics, graduating with a degree from Wesleyan University in 1992. But, his desire to work with images was stronger, so he packed up and moved to Los Angeles, taking on any projects he could find. He partnered with a friend, Scott Wiper, for a short film, “The Return or Wes Lauren” before they both spent 18 months writing, producing and editing a feature length film, “Captain Jack.”

Haris Zambarloukos, BSC grew up in Nicosia, Cyprus, an island outside of Greece. He left Cyprus for London to attend Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, where he discovered a love for cinematography. After college, he was accepted to the graduate program at American Film Institute, where he earned his MFA in cinematography. His thesis film was the short “First Daughter.” A meeting with legendary cinematographer Conrad Hall, ASC, resulted in an internship on “A Civil Action.”

CINEMATOGRAPHER DON BURGESS, ASC, DISCUSSES HIS WORK ON SOURCE CODE

Don Burgess, ASC, grew up in Santa Monica, California, and began his career while still a student at Art Center College of Design. A 2nd unit DP, Johnny Stephens, who was also a friend of the family, asked him if he wanted to work as a loader on a film called “The Sorcerer,” which was shooting in the Dominican Republic. The experience shaped a career that went on to include a collaboration with director Bob Zemeckis on five movies: “Forrest Gump,” “Contact,” “What Lies Beneath,” “Castaway,”  and “The Polar Express.” Other notable directors he worked with, to name a few, include Phillip Noyce, “Blind Fury,” Billy Crystal, “Forget Paris,” Sam Raimi, “Spider-Man,” Gary Winick, “Thirteen Going on Thirty,” Joe Roth “Christmas with the Kranks,” Frank Marshall, “Eight Below” and Albert and Allen Hughes, “The Book of Eli.”

CINEMATOGRAPHER JOHN SEALE, ASC, ACS TALKS ABOUT THE TOURIST

 

Cinematographer John Seale, ASC, ACS, was born in Warwick, Queensland, Australia. His first credits as a camera operator included several films directed by fellow Australian Peter Weir, including “Picnic at Hanging Rock,” (1975) and “Gallipoli” (1981). Soon after Weir moved to the United States, Seale joined him on the project “Witness,” (1985), directed by Weir, and garnered his first Oscar nomination for cinematography. Since then, Seale has earned more than 40 credits as a cinematographer, and worked with directors such as Anthony Minghella (“The English Patient,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Cold Mountain”), Barry Levinson (“Rain Man”), Rob Reiner (“The American President,” “Ghosts of Mississippi”) and Michael Apted “(Gorillas in the Mist”) to name a few. His awards are numerous,  including four Oscar nominations and one win (for "The English Patient"), four ASC Award nominations and one win (also for "The English Patient"), three awards. Seale was recently honored by the American Society of Cinematographers with the ASC International Award, which was presented on February 13, 2011. Seale has been a long-time Panavision customer, so we spoke to him about his career.
