Solid State Recorder - SSR-1
The Panavision® SSR-1 is a compact, lightweight, solid-state recorder that is designed for use on the
Genesis digital camera. It connects directly to the Genesis multi-pin connector top or rear port for on-board, cable-free recording that can be controlled by the camera record button. It may also be used on the Sony
F23 and
F35 or used as a stand-alone unit. When mounted to the Genesis the entire system is compact enough for handheld or Steadicam® use. Using solid state technology rather than a hard disk gives you a unit that is smaller, lighter and much quieter.
The SSR-1 records in a variety of formats without any video compression, making transfers to other devices smooth and without any loss of data. Recording can be done uncompressed as 4:4:4 or 4:2:2. In 4:4:4 SP mode you have 42 minutes of record time at 23.98 fps and in 4:2:2 LP mode you have 84 minutes of record time at 23.98 fps.
In many ways, the SSR-1 works just like the Sony
SRW-1 videotape recorder but there are a few differences between the two. The SSR-1 is about half the size and weight of the SRW-1 and it uses less power. Because the SSR-1 is a solid state recorder instead of a tape recorder, you can access your recorded takes instantly without the need to shuttle through a tape. It is not necessary to pre-roll and there is no danger of recording over a previous take when you press record. The SSR-1 records everything uncompressed, allowing the option of seamless transfer to the
PDTS (Panavision Digital Transfer Station) compressed/uncompressed and/or HDCAM SR tape, with its mild compression. It has a built-in down-converter for NTSC or PAL output even when mounted on the Genesis. The SRW-1 cannot do this when docked on the camera. The SSR-1 also provides a HD-SDI 4:2:2 output for monitoring when mounted to the Genesis and the SRW-1 has no such output when docked on the camera.
Using the SSRD Docking Station along with the SSR-1 gives you HD-SDI output with embedded audio. The SSRD can be used for playback from the SSR-1 on set. A production may use several SSR-1 units for shooting which enables you to transfer the footage from one unit while shooting with another. You may also record to the SSR-1 while it is docked to the SSRD. The SSRD will work like a standard Sony VTR when connected to a controller via its 9-pin remote connector. This compatibility with the Sony protocol makes for a simple integration of the SSR-1 into existing post-production facilities and workflows.
