3D Capture & Rigs
Panavision® excels in the 3D capture arena and has added 3D camera rigs to its comprehensive range of motion picture rental equipment. Production has recently been completed on the following productions, all using equipment from Panavision: “Harold and Kumar 3”, “The Darkest Hour”, “Bait”, and “Pirates of the Caribbean 4”.
The current inventory of 3D camera rigs includes the full size Quasar, mid size Pulsar and compact Neutron manufactured by Technica 3D. The Quasar is the largest of the rigs and was designed for full size cameras such as the Red One, Sony F23, Sony F35, Phantom and Panavision Genesis. With the Quasar the filmmaker has three options for shooting style, beamsplitter under/thru, beamsplitter over/thru or side-by-side. The Pulsar is designed for smaller digital cameras such as the Scarlet, Epic and DSLR cameras with motion capture capabilities like the Canon 5D and 7D. The Neutron is designed for small 2/3-inch or 1/3-inch imager cameras such as the SI-2K MINI, Cumina and the Iconix. All of the Technica 3D rigs incorporate the same simplicity of design, light weight, ease of configuration and operation, and are capable of operating in either side-by-side or beam splitter mode.
The camera rigs were designed to work flawlessly within a variety of cinematic shooting scenarios. They are well crafted and reliable with precise and rigid construction. All three sizes utilize a common set of tools and procedures for alignment and set up. Any of these rigs can be converted from side-by-side to beam splitter, or vice-versa, in ten minutes or less.
In addition to fast conversion times, any of the Technica 3D rigs can be completely setup and ready to shoot in less than 30 minutes. In order to accomplish this, the rigs are shipped in two pieces, the rig and the beam splitter. The beam splitter mirrors are manufactured to the highest specifications for optimal flatness, light transmission and rugged enough to resist flexing from vibration or other camera movement. The rigs work seamlessly on a variety of cranes, remote heads and camera stabilizers and they can be interfaced with stereoscopic optimization processors.
